Materialized Empathy
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO LAUNCH THIS IMPORTANT PROJECT! CLICK HERE TO SUPPORT OUR INDIEGOGO CAMPAIGN

In 2016, Commonomics USA is launching Materialized Empathy, a project dedicated to economic and ecological Justice in American law, policy, and civic life

Millions are economically insecure, and we are all ecologically insecure. This insecurity is morally unacceptable and a source of bad law and policy. Materialized Empathy aims to eliminate classism and artificial scarcity in American law, policy, and civic life.

Our economy and environment are about to change dramatically. Saving the planet means changing our everyday material practices-- changes that can either benefit the socioeconomically disadvantaged or be disastrous for them. Materialized Empathy shapes law, policy, and community practices that embody both justice and sustainability.

The forces of exploitation, extraction, and privatization have their advocacy groups--ALEC and other organizations aggressively shape policies and laws at all levels of American life. Materialized Empathy researches and provides model law and policy to counter and bypass these forces.
Materialized Empathy, a project of Commonomics USA, is a legal- and policy-oriented educational project. We:
  • research, publish, and teach model law and policy,
  • produce daily news and weekly podcasts, and
  • host and facilitate public deliberation
. . . on sustainable, cooperative economic justice and the law. Our advocacy includes:

SUSTAINABLE PUBLIC FINANCE . . . UNIVERSAL ACCESS TO LEGAL SERVICES . . . REPARATIONS AND LOCALLY CONTROLLED DEVELOPMENT. . . COOPERATIVE COMMUNITY ORDINANCES . . . SUPPORT FOR WORKER COOPERATIVES AND MANAGEMENT . . . ECONOMIC JUSTICE FOR THE INCARCERATED . . . LOCAL AGRICULTURE ORDINANCES . . . CLIMATE EGALITARIANISM . . . SOCIOECONOMIC RIGHTS . . . ECONOMIC JUSTICE FOR IMMIGRANTS

Materialized Empathy Project Co-Directors:

Matt Stannard, JD: Longtime economic justice, cooperatives, and democracy advocate. Policy Director at Commonomics USA and board member of the Public Banking Institute. Author of The American Commons (forthcoming).

Ma’ikwe Ludwig, BA: Climate change activist, consensus facilitator and sustainability educator. Executive Director of Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage's nonprofit, and board member of the Fellowship for Intentional Community.
